MEMBERSHIP MATTERS LESSON 1

THE MEANING OF MEMBERSHIP

(Romans 12:4-5)

Introduction: Membership is about belonging to Christ, to His body, and being active in a local congregation.

1. IT IDENTIFIES YOU IN CHRIST:
A. You are someone in the world (John 13:35).
B. You are someone in the body (1 Corinthians 12:12-14,27).
C. Together, not separately, we are the body of Christ.

2. IT INSURES YOUR SPIRITUAL GROWTH:
A. You grow in your maturity (Ephesians 4:13-16).
B. You grow in your love and good works (Hebrews 10:24-25).
C. Together, not separately, we grow up in Christ.

3. IT INSULATES YOU FROM FALLING AWAY:
A. You need help to stand and not fall (1 Corinthians 10:12).
B. You need help to stop temptation (Hebrews 3:12-13).
C. Together, not separately, we defeat the devil.

CONCLUSION: Membership means that you give yourself first to the Lord, and then to one another (2 Corinthians 8:5, Acts 2:41-42).

GROWING UP IN CHRIST LESSON 9 PT 2

THE PRICE FOR CHURCH GROWTH

(Matthew 13:45-46)

Introduction: We must be convinced that growth is necessary and

we must be willing to pay the price.

1. THE PRICE FOR LEADERS:
A. Assume responsibility (Ephesians 4:11):
1) This involves the risk of failure.
2) This involves functioning as a leader.
B. Pray earnestly (James 5:16).
C. Work hard (1 Timothy 3:1).
D. Revise non-growth theology:
1) Some have equated growth with liberalism.
2) Some believe, “God called us to be faithful, not successful.”
3) Stop defending non-growth and be willing to pay the price.

2. THE PRICE FOR MEMBERS:
A. Agree to follow the leadership (Hebrews 13:7, 17).
B. Give generously (Acts 2:44-45).
C. Fellowship with one another (Acts 2:44-46).
D. Minister to others (Ephesians 4:11-12).

CONCLUSION: “The price you pay will not be more than you can afford and the reward you get will be a blessing from the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
