GROWING UP IN CHRIST LESSON 8 PT#
GROWTH AND EVANGELISM
(Matthew 28:18-20)
Introduction: There is a slight difference between church growth and evangelism.
1. ASPECTS OF CHURCH GROWTH:
A. The spiritual maturity of individuals.
B. Addition by transfer (Christians identify with local church)
C. Addition from within (children of members baptized)
D. Addition from without (reaching lost souls outside)
2. ASSESSMENT OF OURSELVES:
A. How many share our belief in Jesus Christ? (1.6 billion)
B. How many identify with the Restoration Movement:
1) The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ): 1 million
2) Churches of Christ (instrumental): 1.2 million
3) Churches of Christ (non-instrumental): 1.7 million
C. How are we doing when it comes to growing numerically?
1) 230,000 less over last 20 years (Christian Chronicle, 2021)
2) The average congregation baptizes about 5-6 each year.
3. APPROACH TO EVANGELISM:
A. Is the Great Commission ours (Matthew 28:18-20)?
B. Is it the job of every Christian (Ephesians 4:11-12)?
C. Is evangelism optional (Mark 16:15-16)?
D. Is evangelism possible?
CONCLUSION: Can you have real and lasting growth without evangelism?

GROWTH AND CHANGE
(Romans 12:2)
Introduction: We have mixed emotions about change.
1. HISTORY OF CHANGE:
A. Old Testament Examples (creation/fall/flood, etc).
B. New Testament Examples (Jesus/church/Gentiles, etc).
C. Modern Day Examples (communication/transportation)
2. HINDRANCES TO CHANGE:
A. Generational Differences (the old and the young)
B. Background Differences (culture/religion/experiences)
C. Other Reasons? (comfortability/uncertainty/division)
3. HELPS TO CHANGE:
A. The Foundational Factors:
1) Leaders need to encourage a climate open to change.
2) Members need to be given both the time & the information needed to see that the change is legitimate.
3) Members need to be made aware that the status quo is not meeting essential needs.
4) Members need to trust their leaders.
5) When changes are made, changeless areas need to be identified and made secure.
6) Changes are not made just for the sake of change.
B. The Fundamental Factor: Transformation (Rom. 12:2).
CONCLUSION: What is your attitude toward change?
