JOSHUA – Claiming Your Victory LESSON 12

JOSHUA’S FAREWELL

(Joshua 23-24)

Introduction: Joshua was a man who had lived a full life. You could also say it ended well. But, in the end, his concern was not about himself. The people were on his mind and he left with a challenge for them to love God and keep His commandments. In his farewell speech, he emphasized three main topics.

1. ISRAEL’S FUTURE DANGERS (23:1-16):
A. What The Lord Did For Israel (1-5):
1) Raised up Abraham and Isaac (1-3)
2) Raised up Jacob and his children (4)
3) Raised up Moses and Aaron (5)
B. What The Lord Said To Israel (6-10):
1) “Obey Me” (6)
2) “Don’t associate with pagans” (7)
3) “Be faithful to Me” (8-10)
C. What The Lord Would Do For Israel (11-16):
1) Drive out their enemies (11-13)
2) Destroy the disobedient (14-16)

2. ISRAEL’S PAST BLESSINGS (24:1-13):
A. God Chose Israel (1-4)
B. God Delivered Israel (5-7)
C. God Guided Israel (8-10)
D. God Gave Israel Their Land (11-13)

3. ISRAEL’S PRESENT RESPONSIBILITIES (24:14-33):
A. It Involved A Decision (14-18)
B. It Involved A Devotion (19-33):
1) Joshua’s Warning (19-28)
2) Joshua’s Witness (29-33)

CONCLUSION: What is God’s past, present, and future for you?

JOSHUA – Claiming Your Victory LESSON 10

RECEIVING YOUR INHERITANCE

(Joshua 13-21)

Introduction: There’s a parallel in Scripture between inheriting eternal life and the Israelites inheriting the Promised Land. Though God’s people conquered Canaan, they would receive it as an inheritance (a gift). Ownership of the land was a gracious act of God. In Joshua 13-21, we read about the distribution of the land and it takes place in the following 4 stages:

1. THE ASSIGNMENTS MADE AT GILGAL (Joshua 13-17):
A. The Promise (13:1-7)
B. The Provisions (13:8-14)
C. The Previous Decisions (13:15-33):
1) Reuben (15-23) 3) East Manasseh (29-31)
2) Gad (24-28) 4) Levi (32-33)
D. The Partitioning (Joshua 14-17):
1) The Allotment (14:1-15)
2) The Areas (15:1 – 17:13)
3) The Appeal (17:14-18)

2. THE ASSIGNMENTS MADE AT SHILOH (Joshua 18-19):
A. The Delay (18:1-3)
B. The Dispatch (18:4-10)
C. The Divisions (18:10 – 19:51)

3. THE ASSIGNMENT OF THE CITIES OF REFUGE (Joshua 20):
A. Why They Existed – To protect certain people (1-6)
B. Where They Existed – 3 cities east & 3 west of Jordan (7-9)

4. THE ASSIGNMENT OF 48 LEVITICAL CITIES (Joshua 21):
A. Where They Were – Among the 12 tribes (1-8)
B. Which Ones They Were – A list is given (9-45)

CONCLUSION: The land was ultimately given as an inheritance.

JOSHUA – Claiming Your Victory LESSON 9

BLUNDERS INTO BLESSINGS

(Joshua 9-10)

Introduction: While it seems that only those who do nothing make no mistakes, doing nothing is a mistake that can have even more disastrous results. Joshua and the people made a mistake in their first attempt to conquer Ai, but we find them making another wrong move when they were tricked into making a promise to provide protection for a group of their enemies who lived in Canaan. There are three main components in their story of making the best out of a bad situation:

1. BELIEVING THE ENEMY (9:1-15):
A. What the Gibeonites did (1-5)
B. What the Gibeonites said (6-13)
C. Why the Gibeonites succeeded (14-15)

2. ENLISTING THE ENEMY (9:16-27):
A. Complaints from God’s people (16-18)
B. Commitment from God’s leaders (19-21)
C. Compromise from Joshua (22-27)

3. DEFENDING THE ENEMY (10:1-43):
A. The Battles (1-39):
1) Against Gibeon’s enemies (1-14):
a) The Pagans (1-5)
b) The Plea (6-7)
c) The Provision (8-14)
2) Against Makkedah (15-28)
3) Against Others (29-39)
B. The Bottom Line (40-43)

CONCLUSION: God’s ability to turn our blunders into blessings is not an excuse to be careless, but an encouragement to be very courageous.
