LEVITICUS – Pursuing Holiness LESSON 13

LEARNING FROM LEVITICUS

(A Summary of Leviticus)

Introduction: When God devotes an entire book of the Bible to the subject of holiness, you know it must be important. There are many fascinating details in this book that we certainly didn’t cover, but the main lessons are clear. Let’s summarize a few of these lessons and make some practical applications to our Christian life today.

1. HOLINESS INITIATES WITH GOD:
A. Who He Is – “I am holy” (11:45)
B. What He Wants – “Be holy” (11:45)
C. Where It Starts – “Go to the altar” (9:7)

2. HOLINESS INVOLVES YOUR EFFORT:
A. The Command to Obey (22:31)
B. The Correct Worship (10:1-3)
C. The Circumcision of the Heart (26:41)

3. HOLINESS IMPACTS OTHERS:
A. Defiling A Community (18:24-25)
B. Disregarding God’s People (Hebrews 10:24-25)

4. HOLINESS IMPRESSES GOD:
A. Praising God (10:3)
B. Pleasing God (26:3-4,9)

CONCLUSION: God’s command (“Be holy, for I am holy”) is the promise of His enablement.

LEVITICUS – Pursuing Holiness LESSON 12

KEEPING YOURSELF HOLY

(Leviticus 26-27)

Introduction: We are often good starters, but not great finishers. The last two chapters of Leviticus contained simple reminders about following through with holiness, with the exclamation, “These are the commandments which the Lord commanded Moses for the children of Israel on Mount Sinai” (27:34). The challenge from God is now “Keep My commandments” (26:3).

1. THE COMMANDMENTS TO BE KEPT (26:1-13):
A. Keeping Idols Out (1)
B. Keeping Days Holy (2)
C. Keeping Statutes & Being Blessed (3-13):
1) Blessed by Produce (3-5)
2) Blessed by Peace (6-8)
3) Blessed by Prosperity (9-13)

2. THE CONDITIONS TO BE KEPT (26:14-39):
A. Pride Broken by God (14-20)
B. Provisions Removed by God (21-26)
C. Problems With Nations Caused by God (27-39)

3. THE COVENANT TO BE KEPT (26:40-46):
A. “I will remember My covenant” (40-43)
B. “I will not cast them away” (44-46)

4. THE COMMITMENTS TO BE KEPT (27:1-34):
A. Redeemable Things (1-25):
1) Persons & Animals (1-13)
2) Houses & Fields (14-25)
B. Unredeemable Things (26-34):
1) Firstborn Clean Animals (26-27)
2) Devoted Things (28-29)
3) Tithes (30-34)

CONCLUSION: Holiness involves obedience and diligence.

LEVITICUS – Pursuing Holiness LESSON 11

LAWS IN THE LAND

(Leviticus 25)

Introduction: The promise of entering the land had attached to it both responsibilities and privileges. God told Moses to tell the people, “When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a sabbath to the Lord” (Leviticus 25:2). “Land” cannot “keep a sabbath” (25:2), so the idea was that God owned the people and the land and they had to obey His commandments and trust in His promises. This would then result in some wonderful blessings.

1. REST FOR THE LAND – SABBATH YEAR (25:1-7, 18-24):
A. The Six Years of Work (1-3)
B. The Seventh Year of Rest (4-7):
1) No sowing or pruning (4)
2) No reaping (5)
3) Natural provisions allowed (6-7)
C. The Statutes for The Land (18-24):
1) Don’t worry about eating (18-22)
2) Don’t sell the land (23-24)

2. RELEASE & RESTORATION – THE YEAR OF JUBILEE (25:8-17):
A. Repentance & Release (8-10)
B. Rest & Restoration (11-17)

3. REDEMPTION – THE KINSMAN-REDEEMER (25:25-55):
A. Redemption of The Land (25-28)
B. Redemption of Houses (29-34)
C. Redemption of The Poor (35-55):
1) A bankrupt brother in debt (35-38)
2) A poor brother who became a slave (39-46)
3) A Jew enslaved by a Gentile (47-55)

CONCLUSION: God cares how we use His provisions.
