LEVITICUS – Pursuing Holiness LESSON 10

THINGS THAT ARE HOLY

(Leviticus 24)

Introduction: The book of Leviticus is all about God’s holiness. The most important structure in the camp of Israel was the tabernacle, where God dwelt and where the priests and Levites served Him. The tent covering was anything but impressive. It was made of badgers skin, but inside the tent, it was beautiful, costly, and glorious. More importantly, the tabernacle represented the presence of God, much like the Holy Spirit dwells in those who are God’s children today. God simply wants us to be reminded of His holiness and see its significance. Let’s consider three more things that serve as reminders.

1. THE HOLY OIL (24:1-4):
A. The Command For It (1-2):
1) “Bring it properly” (2a)
2) “Burn it continually” (2b)
B. The Control Over It (3-4):
1) The charge of it was given to Aaron (3)
2) The continual practice was for Israel (4)

2. THE HOLY BREAD (24:5-9):
A. The Preparation of the Bread (5-7)
B. The Proper Consumption by the Priests (8-9)

3. THE HOLY NAME OF GOD (24:10-23):
A. Dishonoring God’s Name (10-11)
B. Determining God’s Will (12-16)
C. Discerning God’s Mind (17-22)
D. Dispensing God’s Justice (23)

CONCLUSION: Our God is a holy God and we must honor Him, whether by bringing gifts or respecting His name.

LEVITICUS – Pursuing Holiness LESSON 9

FEASTS THAT CELEBRATE GOD’S FAVOR
(Leviticus 23)

Introduction: God’s people need days and special occasions to remind them of God’s goodness. In keeping with the theme of the book of Leviticus, pursuing holiness is also a matter of celebrating the favor of God upon our lives. So, God gave them feasts to have a way of remembering all that He had provided for them.
1. THE SALVATION GOD PROVIDES (23:1-14):
A. The Passover – Christ’s Blood (1-5):
1) “These are My feasts” (1-3)
2) “This is the Passover” (4-5)
B. The Unleavened Bread – Christ’s Body (6-8):
1) The eating of the bread (6)
2) The exemption from work (7)
3) The exercise of an offering (8)
C. The Firstfruits – Christ’s Resurrection (9-14):
1) The Grain Offering (9-11,14)
2) The Burnt Offering (12)
3) The Drink Offering (13)

2. THE SANCTIFICATION GOD PROVIDES (23:15-44):
A. The Pentecost – The Church’s Birthday (15-22)
1) The Grain Offering (15-17)
2) The Burnt Offering (18)
3) The Sin Offering (19)
4) Other Instructions (20-22)
B. The Trumpets – The Christian’s Calling (23-25)
C. The Day Of Atonement – The Christian’s Forgiveness (26-32)
D. The Tabernacles – The Christian’s Deliverance (33-44)
1) Delivering up offerings (33-38)
2) Dwelling in temporary booths (39-44)

CONCLUSION: These feasts are about God’s favor fully realized in the coming of Christ.

LEVITICUS – Pursuing Holiness LESSON 8

THE SANCTITY OF SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP

(Leviticus 21-22)

Introduction: Good leadership is important in every area of life. The spiritual leaders in the nation of Israel were the priests. In keeping with the theme of the book of Leviticus, personal holiness was crucial in leading God’s people. The priests were the avenue through which the people could approach God. So, God was very serious about the qualities of these leaders.

1. PERSONAL CONDUCT (21:1-15):
A. The Priest’s Sons (1-8)
B. The Priest’s Daughter (9)
C. The Priest Himself (10-15)

2. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS (21:16-24):
A. The Defects Prohibited (16-20)
B. The Duty Prohibited (21-24)

3. PROFESSIONAL CONCERNS (22:1-33):
A. Unclean Priests (1-9)
B. Unqualified Guests (10-16)
C. Unacceptable Sacrifices (17-33):
1) The Prohibitions (17-30):
a) No defects allowed (17-25)
b) Newborns not allowed (26-30)
2) The Purpose (31-33)

CONCLUSION: The sanctity of spiritual leaders is very important to God (Lev. 21:4).

LEVITICUS – Pursuing Holiness LESSON 7

STATUTES FOR SANCTIFICATION

(Leviticus 17-20)

Introduction: God’s laws are holy and good (Romans 7:12). They were intended to bring life, but because of sin, those laws brought death (Romans 7:9-10). This is not the fault of a holy God and it doesn’t negate the good that laws can accomplish. It just means that it takes more than good laws to make a good society. Of course, we need a perfect Savior to present us without blemish before God. Laws were given to the people though to show the need for living as close as possible to the will of God. Let’s consider a few areas of life.

1. THE SANCTITY OF BLOOD (17:1-16):
A. The Offering of Food (1-9)
B. The Eating of Blood (10-14)
C. The Eating of Animals Found Dead (15-16)

2. THE SANCTITY OF SEX (18:1-30):
A. Who Not To Have Sex With (1-23)
B. Why Not To Have Sex With Them (24-30)

3. THE SANCTITY OF THE LAW (19:1-37):
A. Laws Relating to God
B. Laws Relating to the Sabbath
C. Laws Relating to Others
D. Laws Relating to Things

4. THE SANCTITY OF PUNISHMENT (20:1-27):
A. The Penalty for Worshiping Molech (1-5)
B. The Penalty for Consulting Spirits (6-8)
C. The Penalty for Cursing Parents (9)
D. The Penalty for Committing Sexual Sins (10-21)
E. The Purpose of God’s Laws of Sanctification (22-27)

CONCLUSION: Sanctification starts with statutes (Lev. 20:7-8), but finds ultimate fulfillment in the Spirit (Galatians 3:2-3).
