LEVITICUS – Pursuing Holiness LESSON 6

ACCEPTABLE ATONEMENT

(Leviticus 16)

Introduction: Sin has a price tag and it isn’t pretty. “The wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23). A holy God cannot ignore sin and must, in fact, demonstrate a holy reaction to remove it. Sin causes a separation (death) from a God who has no sin. Atonement is the way God deals with sin. It’s the removal of sin by paying a price. An act of another’s death illustrates God’s righteous wrath. Until the cross, it was the death of animals. Within the tabernacle system, the Day of Atonement prepared the people for the coming of Jesus.

LEVITICUS – Pursuing Holiness LESSON 5

HEALTH AND HOLINESS

(Leviticus 13-15)

Introduction: Diseases and discharges are the concern in this section of Leviticus. The spiritual application is the sin, salvation, and sanctification of God’s people. These are issues crucial to God’s desire for His people to “Be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy” (Leviticus 19:2). Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes said, “The beginning of health is to know the disease.” It sounds like the words of The Great Physician.

2) Burn it in the fire (52-59)

2. SALVATION – RESTORATION OF THE DISEASED (14:1-32):
A. The Priest Comes to the Leper (1-7)
B. The Person Cleanses Himself (8-32):
1) He washes himself (8-9)
2) He offers the required sacrifices (10-23)

3. SANCTIFICATION – REGULATIONS FOR SANCTITY (15:1-33):
A. Discharges For Men (1-18):
1) Unnatural (1-15)
2) Natural (16-18)
B. Discharges For Women (19-33)
1) Natural (19-24)
2) Unnatural (25-33)

LEVITICUS – Pursuing Holiness LESSON 4

CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS

(Leviticus 11-12)

Introduction: For the Hebrew people, and particularly the priests, cleanliness wasn’t just next to godliness, it was absolutely connected to it. Personal hygiene and spiritual purity are often intricately linked throughout the Bible. It was simply another reminder in the book of Leviticus that God’s desire was, “Be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy” (19:2). Leviticus 11-12 called the people to submit various aspects of their physical daily lives to standards that would show their willingness to be spiritually clean before God. Whether it was in the selection of foods, the handling of dead animals, or caring for a mother and her newborn, nothing was left to chance and every precaution was taken to avoid defilement.

A. Wild Animals (1-8)
B. Water Creatures (9-12)
C. Winged Animals (13-19)
D. Winged Insects (20-23)

2. DEALING WITH DEAD ANIMALS (11:24-43):
A. Carcasses of Unclean Animals (24-28, 41-43)
B. Creeping Things (29-38)
C. Carcasses of Clean Animals (39-40)

3. DISCERNING THE UNCLEAN (11:44-47):
A. Admonition: Be Devout (44-45)
B. Assessment: Be Discerning (46-47)

4. DECLARING PURITY IN BIRTH (12:1-8):
A. Conception (1-2)
B. Circumcision (3)
C. Cleansing (4-5)
D. Consecration (6-8)

CONCLUSION: Will you distinguish between the clean and the unclean (Leviticus 10:10)?

LEVITICUS – Pursuing Holiness LESSON 3

HOW TO BE A PRIEST

(Leviticus 8-10)

Introduction: Under the old covenant, God people had a priesthood. Under the new covenant, God’s people are a priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). This is in keeping with God’s desire, “Be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy” (19:2). Leviticus 8-10 describes the eight-day ordination ceremony for the high priest Aaron and his sons. Three principles stand out and show us how to pursue the holiness God requires.

1. RESPECT GOD’S AUTHORITY (Chapter 8):
A. Congregating with the people (1-5)
B. Cleansing with water & clothing with garments (6-9)
C. Confirming with oil (10-13)
D. Consecrating with sacrifices (14-29)
E. Closing with anointing and announcements (30-36)

2. REFLECT GOD’S GLORY (Chapter 9):
A. Bringing God’s sacrifices (1-21)
1) The promise of God’s presence (1-6)
2) The performance of God’s priests (7-14)
3) The presentation of the sacrifices (15-21)
B. Blessing God’s people (22-23a)
C. Beholding God’s glory (23b-24)

3. RECEIVE GOD’S DISCIPLINE (Chapter 10):
A. The Sin (1-2):
1) Profaning Service (1)
2) Punishing Sin (2)
B. The Sorrow (3-11):
1) Pressing On (3-7)
2) Practicing Holiness (8-11)
C. The Sincerity (12-20)
1) Preaching Diligence (12-15)
2) Pardoning Deviation (16-20)

CONCLUSION: How are you pursuing holiness (Jeremiah 5:30-31)?
