GROWING UP IN CHRIST LESSON 7

GROWTH AND CHANGE

(Romans 12:2)

Introduction: We have mixed emotions about change.

1. HISTORY OF CHANGE:
A. Old Testament Examples (creation/fall/flood, etc).
B. New Testament Examples (Jesus/church/Gentiles, etc).
C. Modern Day Examples (communication/transportation)

2. HINDRANCES TO CHANGE:
A. Generational Differences (the old and the young)
B. Background Differences (culture/religion/experiences)
C. Other Reasons? (comfortability/uncertainty/division)

3. HELPS TO CHANGE:
A. The Foundational Factors:
1) Leaders need to encourage a climate open to change.
2) Members need to be given both the time & the information needed to see that the change is legitimate.
3) Members need to be made aware that the status quo is not meeting essential needs.
4) Members need to trust their leaders.
5) When changes are made, changeless areas need to be identified and made secure.
6) Changes are not made just for the sake of change.
B. The Fundamental Factor: Transformation (Rom. 12:2).

CONCLUSION: What is your attitude toward change?

GROWING IN YOUR LOVE (1 Corinthians 13:1-7)

Introduction: Love can be a very broad word. It is the very essence of our relationships, with God and others. Without love as a motive, accomplishments amount to nothing (1 Cor. 13:1-3).

1. LOVE INVOLVES THE MIND (UNSELFISHNESS):
A. Consider God’s great love (Philippians 2:1)
B. Conjoin with God’s love (Philippians 2:2)
C. Consider others more lovingly (Philippians 2:3-4)

2. LOVE INVOLVES THE EMOTIONS (COMPASSION):
A. Compassion for the lost (Matthew 9:35-38)
B. Covering up brotherly grievances (1 Peter 3:8, 4:8)
C. Communing in the spirit of grace (Col. 3:12-16)

3. LOVE INVOLVES THE WILL (ACTION):
A. Commands prove your love to God (John 14:15)
B. Commitments to one another prove your love to others (John 13:35)

CONCLUSION: Love causes growth in the body (Eph. 4:15-16)
